After more research, modcats has it listed as a "Flute Lamp" base from Gregory A Van Pelt.
Although I will still stick to my guns and say it's 100% diy-able!

Fabrics of the same weight will help, thinner fabrics (in comparison to others in the project) will have a tendency to pull, but it really doesn't matter!
