I'm going to go against the flow here and say that I actually think it's kindof cool. I could never destroy books, though, so it would have to be ones that were unreadable for some reason.
Yeah, too boring for me personally...sterile. It doesn't feel comfortable or homey at all, more institutional. Beautiful bones, but needs some color and personality!
Not to be obnoxious, but also for about $10 more (and less all the time, but maybe too, less the fun) you can get a new one at a zillion different places online.

Here's yet another vote for roman shades. You could also do curtains on the long window, but the same roman shades in all would look nice.
