love the artwork. you should check out principle gallery- www.principlegallery.com in virginia. they have some fantastic contemporary realism artists.

my guess is that it is tile, the ones i have seen are long strip tile about 1/4-1/2 wide and up to 12" long.

I haven't worked with these tiles but I have worked with Victorian reproduction embossed wallpaper, which is the same idea. It was easy to paint other than it takes more time than say a flat wall ...
