Depending on the yarn used, it can be more like a cotton ball and thus doesn't absorb the way a washcloth would. Also depending on the yarn, there are some you can use to scrub pots etc too.
I tried "want, need, wear, read" for awhile but it didn't make *me* happy. I like giving my kids gifts of things I know they'd love. I don't think it's teaching them that happiness comes from stuff...
