I hope you don't equate "modern" with "blah". The room has character - and mid-century design is full of color and contrasting textures - making everything beige would be boring.

Think scale .. large space = large planters. Window planters should be twice the size and painted a bright color. Maybe add colorful shutters to the windows and paint the front door and the patio ...

A misting with a spray bottle full of vinegar water helps neutralize any unpleasant odors and leaves a clean scent - better than commercial sprays.
