In my student flat in London there was hideous wallpaper - but because it was new, we couldn't do anything about it - so I posted posters/pix and so on all over the wall and secured it into the man...
In a time of desperation I actually put recycled bubble wrap under an inexpensive foam mattress topper to shore up my aging mattress. A bit noisy, but it worked.

Got a better result by hanging a Van Gogh reproduction of a field (which featured some perspective) above the sink. I recommend landscape paintings with perspective to bring the outside in.
