jooltman- no splinters anywhere! the fabric wraps right around the lids and the shells themselves are very smooth and finished. I actually have 2 more of the shells- a tall one and a very tiny one...

I actually think that the color of the room in which the items are displayed is off-putting. Imagine the items against a softer color and they're not so bad.
