Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but the main photo, with the chairs on the landing, and the photo wtih the slippers/shoes on the steps, just don't t seem safe to me.

I like metallic idea above. Lately, though, it seems like I've been seeing more backsplash-less kitchens.

I have the L furniture layout in my living room so as to not block the television. Not ideal for conversation. If TV wasn't there, I would definitely situate occasional chairs directly across sofa.
