if you found a metal crib you could have it powder coated...i'm not sure if that is harmful? maybe someone knows? but i don't think it is...

the other option if you don't want to see gathers on the side of your mattress is to cut two ovals the size of your mattress with an extra 1/2", then cut a 4" strip of fabric the length of the diam...
