Paint the back of the bookshelf (ie the wall that the books sit against) a coordinating color with the tiles on the fireplace.

When my sister and I were very young we used to put everything edible in the kitchen cabinets in a blender and blend them into "concoctions". Very wasteful....very naughty....VERY messy.
