i recently did this with a telephone table for my entrance way. no sanding necessary and one coat of semi-gloss black from benjamin moore did the trick. Made it look super expensive.
i think making a bookshelf to fit the exact space would be nice. or wallpapering the background and hanging shelves that are the exact width between the moulding.

the only thing i don't like about my apartment is that it doesn't have a window in the bathroom. it makes such a HUGE difference in the room
lame and ugly. would go perfectly with a giant ugly beige-carpeted cat tree. feline pine plastic tub under the sink is good enough for me and my cat.

i can't help but think that some unfortunate upskirt moments will befall the owner of the mirrored bench.
i have the lina folding chairs in black from dwr and they look surprisingly good as actual permanent chairs with my chrome legged kitchen table.
