we use this method as well. our garden is large enough to place a layer of cardboard between our vegetable rows inside the garden. if you want a more attractive view try laying down the cardboard...

i'm a designer and always have leftover carpet samples. i carpeted half of my 1700 sq ft loft from them and it looked great. my dogs loved having a carpeted area for their little butts.
