My very independent 85 year old neighbour has done something similar as she can no longer climb her stairs. Most elderly people want to stay in their own homes as long as possible.

Cleaning the kitchen and bathroom and tidying is normal good hosting but why would you care if people are rude enough to snoop in to cupboards and drawers. Maybe a few well placed mouse traps.
