DC has community gardens too - over 30. Including one of the few remaining Victory Gardens. They are very popular and most have long waiting lists, so this is definitely a possible solution to that...
mmm... skyline and graeters. I've actually had my brother send me canned skyline -- not quite the same, but still really good. I might just have order some banana ice cream online - sooooo good!
Also if the gal was looking to build raised beds for edibles -- untreated lumber is a must. As you said, pressure-treated lumber is filled with nastiness.
