I've hit many indendent hardware stores and several True-Values in downtown Manhattan, and gotten good service at all of them. Special mention to Chambers St. Hardware - not only are they happy to...
I completely disagree with NPR. "Modern" and "Contemporary" have specific connotations in architecture and design. Ulrika has provided a good, brief explanation of Modern, and Contemporary essent...
These are stunning and totally worth the price. I know just enough about quilting to value the time and effort spent on these. Completely out of my price range, but oh-so droolworthy!
I don't see any major design fails. I like seeing a big retail chain working with artists and taking the risk to sell less commercial pieces. The only item that's really impractical is the ladder...
I purchased a 7-piece set of these vintage bathroom accessories on Ebay. I'd always assumed they were cemented in or something, they look and feel so permanent, but they're actually easy to remove...
edava72, I did a lot of research a couple of years ago when looking to have an old steel medical cabinet powder-coated. I remember one body shop telling me they'd stopped painting furniture, and I...
We've gone coffee table-less for years. We have a nice large living room area, plenty of space for one, but I've enjoyed having the room for our kid, his friends, and the dog to roll around. We u...
Lori, I'm assuming you live in San Francisco? NYC summers can be incredibly hot and humid. Before a/c was common here, folks coped with summer by either escaping the city or sleeping on their fir...
The whole thing seems odd - it makes me wonder about the thought process behind the object. I realize it's mounted on the wall correctly, but it looks like it's been turned on it's side. Awkward....
I've been looking for a way to display a large map on my nephew's bedroom wall. I agree with slowdown that this trend is already fully exploited, but my nephew knows nothing about decor and has an...
The best thing about this design is the material used to fill the rods - just look at those marbles - so why not save yourself about $200, buy normal towel rods, and get some beautiful marbles to d...
We've generally had very good luck with houseguests, but I do remember my brother-in law once accidentally letting our cat out, despite my warning to keep the door shut. The cat was recovered with...
amers, bedbugs can be in almost anything - I've heard of exterminators finding them in alarm clocks. And they can live without feeding for a ridiculous length of time - up to a year. I'm in NYC ...
"We" and "us" is Beth Ziegler, this blog entry's author (see her name at the bottom of the entry. This is one thing I dislike about AT - the use of the editorial we.
Cute, but presumably everything would read backwards when in the shower, so perhaps just stick to singing and leave the studying for teeth-brushing time.
I have done this in a former apartment (not skulls though). I believe I used Varathane high-gloss polyurethane. Anything water-based over latex paint would be fine. It was really nice, very subtle.

It's Darth Vader's lair! I can picture him lounging on the sectional playing Lego Star Wars.

It's really annoying to click to a post from the main page, only to be told to click again to read the full post. I'll skip it.
You can find them for $15-20 at flea markets and on Ebay
