I found that I needed pliers to debeard mussels--it might be easier than trying to pinch the beard between your fingers.

Breaking the ends off of asparagus is definitely one of life's simple pleasures...
Not sure if this counts, but we'd use it for Szechuan peppercorns (or cardamom).
I use these a lot. I've also tried roasting canned tomatoes like Mark Bittman says he does, and that produces a different, but equally good, flavor.
