I would find some unique pillows, maybe black and white with text on them to replace those (yawn) on the couch. Pillows are tough to get just right. Are there any pillow consultants out there?

With your own furniture in the room, you may see it in a different light.
Paint the wall or paper it. Put stuff on the dresser that does not compete with it colorwise.
The apartment would really be stunning with a major painting in the livingroom and in the bedroom. Trust your instincts!
