One great trick I learned from a friend is to take a picture of that old t-shirt, crazy mug, or whatever the item is you can't let go. Keep the picture for memory's sake and get rid of the item!
How about painting the inside of the nook a charcoal grey (artists grey from Ralph Lauren is hot!), or chocolate brown.
A really dark color would be a nice dramatic backdrop for eithe...

This is so funny! I moved to Brazil during the late 80's and 90's, and remember that all houses had these. They seemed so "old world" to me, and yet here we are, bringing this genious thing back.
