I had a vintage 1920's gas range in my first apartment in San Francisco. It was simple, large enough, and reliable enough. The oven was tricky to regulate, but once I got an oven thermometer, all...
I've had the same box of Saran Wrap for nearly two years now, and have more than half left. But I do use it to wrap doughs that must be chilled. I use zipper-type bags to freeze flat pie crusts, ...
Instead of the broiler for browning, consider my trick - brown over charcoal, then wrap in foil and bake at 200 degrees for about 2 hours. Then unwrap, and sauce, then finish at 400 degrees in the...
Cute, yeah. But I imagine my guest leaving the sticks all over the house and yard. Why not just put 'em on a plate and deliver them to the mouth by old-fashioned fingers?
I am so blessed to have nearly all of all of my older relatives' lovely things - not furniture (sadly), but linens, porcelain, crockery, pots, crystal, silver, carving sets, wooden cutting boards, ...
OK, y'all - here is one of my very best secrets. But first, a story: My son went to an international high school, and there was a yearly food festival in which the most fantastic foods were broug...
I second the solar option. I made one out of a large pizza box lined with foil and cooked stuffed tomatoes in it, ratatouille, baked tiny potatoes, and - ta da - beef stroganoff (made with hamburg...
In 1987 I bought a combination egg pricker-egg timer at a a tiny German grocery store for under 1 DM. It still is in use, and really helps boil eggs so they don't crack.
I don't ever snap, but I do peel and trim. I do save those peelings and trimmings in a freezer bag, and when I have enough, I boil 'em for broth to make cream of asparagus soup. I learned this wh...
Their shoe horns for $.99, the bamboo spatulas (but I like the ones above better, I think). I still have wine glasses I bought from an Ikea in Germany in 1988 for about $.25 each - they are thin, ...
I also prefer the baker's edge pan. It seems to me one is stuck pretty much baking choco things in this pan. Even those with disposable income may not have so much "disposable" storage space.
My pantry-washroom. It's a dark hole that collects crap. No window, the only natural light comes in when I open the door to the garage, and the big garage door is also open. I'd like a source of...

iona, can you post a recipe for your bagels? My grandkids don't like traditional bagels, but would love yours!
Bring it to a La Creuset store or send it to the company. They will replace it.
Ossi di morderi?

I've had these poached in red-wine syrup in Germany. Made with plums in August, and served with a wine custard and whipped cream.
Eau de vie mirabelle from Bitche, France. Bought it in '06, and have only drunk half the bottle.
My favorite sandwich - split a small pit in half, stuff it with feta and drizzle with honey to taste.

This is the one I have, from King Arthur . I have had it since 1992, and because it is aluminum, I can also use it to lift and fli...
