corkboard/blackboard is pretty darned awesome. i've been tryign to figure out what i can do with that area of my house and still get some use out of it.

no, don't DIY, don't buy an expensive cover - but a better and more loved piece from the start.
i think the only DIY i would do is paint - but then again, the chairs are so inexpensive...
looking at the breakdown - i'm assuming shares a place with a roommate and they are sharing expenses. if he's smart enough to save $200/ mo. - i doubt he's starving.

don't be afraid to repurpose. something you don't "love" in one place anymore might be better served using it in a new way or very different location.
that is a perfect pop of color on the floor - but, you know... too small.
