I think an outdoor rug would soften it up a bit.
Get some artwork, vases, flowers, and pull out some books. I wouldn't worry as much about furniture, especially since you have a tight budget.
I'd add character with accessories like a cool fireplace screen. I'd also think about painting the mantle.
