Walls and Fireplace: WHITE PAINT. It will make a world of difference. Then begin to add color with a painting over the fireplace, some pretty cushions and throw blankets.
I thought the living room and dining room weren't bad, but also not to my taste. The rest of the house was hideous. I agree with LBhirise. It was a "hot mess."

We try to keep our cats off the table but they are constantly testing our authority.
Wire brush (wear a mask and googles) to remove rust flakes. Then paint.
