I think dark floors are beautiful, but I live in a first floor apartment in Manhattan, so light floors are the only way to go for me. I simply don't get enough light to paint my floors dark.

I would add that it makes sense to buy local wood, North American wood, which is more likely to be sustainably harvested instead of tropical woods from the rain forest.

P.S. When you bleach the wood (depending on the type of wood) it should turn bone white, but you will still see the grain.

paint the ceilings white, and/or bleach the floors (use wood bleach paste, not a bottle of clorox ;).

If you are refinishing an existing wood floor to get the pale color, use wood bleach. Test a piece of flooring before you bleach the whole floor.
This IS an amazing book. I've read it cover to cover and I'm really looking forward to starting my new garden this spring.
