Since you've gone to the trouble of sanding it down to the wood I would say stain it. In a few years you can always paint over the stain if you need a change.

I went to value village and found they had a TON of little owl figurines, mostly in brass. I grabbed one for $1.99 and spray painted it yellow, and it looks just like the one above.

In a drawer, sitting on top of non-slip drawer liner. I have 4 or 5 good knifes that all lay in a row, single file. It's a minimalist's knife drawer.
