i vote for white walls, a colorful, patterned shower curtain (a la Josef Frank) and a more simplified window treatment -- white roman shade possibly?

What if the walls were painted a neutral color -- a buttery cream or a light, warm gray -- and the window treatment was something a bit bolder? Light, bright green or olive or even a patterned curt...

These are great. The last issue of Blueprint had a DIY project that looked a lot like these -- can't find a link but it involved applying clip art to furniture. Could be a nice (cheaper) alternative.
