I would not paint the walls. I like the look and feel of it now. What is wrong with one dark room? There is such a thing as too much "neutral". LEAVE IT! I think its gorgeous.

Cannot beat that price!! I agree it would work as either a dresser or a sideboard/credenza but I am leaning more towards dresser due to the drawers. Buffets tend to have doors.
