Instead of using staples for each loop I use a metal brad and slide the loops all onto the brad with the prongs facing downwards. Then just spread the prongs on the bottom of the bow and it's good ...

I like Behr "Smokey Slate" It's a light blue/green color bright enough to add a nice punch, but neutral enough that other colors in the space will work well
