I think one things that will last are stainless steel appliances. They've been popular commercially longer than residentially and I think they make a kitchen look more "professional".

I like putting out nice towels and lighting a candle in the extra bath when I'm expecting guests. Otherwise, my husband uses it and its always so messy!
My apartment is small so the living room has only been rearranged once in the past 2 years. The guest bedroom has been through MANY transformations though!
