Cork tiles my friend. Cool in summer, warm in winter, naturally antimicrobial, and noise dampening. Treat cork the same way you treat hardwood.

Use bicycle inner tube patches, for latex inner tubes.
I think a dark background sets off the dishes beautifully, but blackboard paint? No. Something that looks like lapis lazuli? Oh yes.
For what it's worth, where I come from, mimosa flowers are pink and white, and downy-looking. Here's a good photo:
